Sunset Heritage Precinct is a beautiful historical site that features what was originally established as an Old Man's Home in 1904. Many of the buildings remain with most of the preserved buildings fenced off and some of the restored buildings open to wander around. You can walk around with grounds with your dog on a lead. With beautiful views of the Swan River, a trail down to the Swan River Foreshore 3 (off the lead area), bbq and picnic area overlooking the river and kids playground too, it's simply a beautiful place to take in some special Perth history and enjoy the elevated Swan River views.
Most of the Sunset Heritage Precinct is fenced off but there are some areas you can wander through and read some the plaques throughout the precinct with information about the history of the area. It is strictly dogs on the lead in this area, as the area is under camera surveillance and heavy security to protect this very unique piece of Perth history.
After you have wandered the buildings you can follow a trail down to the Swan River Foreshore. The trail is well signposted, and dogs need to stay on a lead until you get down to the bottom grassed area.
Most of the length of the river along here is retaining wall on the waters edge, but if you walk a little further down (towards your right if you are facing the river) there is a nice beach area for a run around and a splash. This is referred to as Foreshore 3 on the City of Nedlands website and is designated a dog exercise area.
Heading back to the Sunset Heritage Precinct, if you want to stay a while you will find a beautiful bbq and picnic area at the top of the staircase, with lots of natural shade, bbqs and seating, so you can sit back and enjoy the incredible view from here. Just remember dogs must be on a lead in this area.
There is a water fountain and dog bowl here too, and toilets are located closer to the kids playground area.
The bbq picnic area is located approximately 500m walk from the playground area that is near the carpark entrance to the Sunset Heritage Precinct.
This is a truly amazing place to visit. We highly recommend putting on your walking shoes and really explore the whole place, around the buildings and right down to the Swan River Foreshore. Pack a bbq or picnic lunch and enjoy some of the best views of the Swan River in Perth while you are surrounded by a wealth of Perth history, in this unique and very special historical precinct.
